I am very sorry to hear of Philip’s death. He was a remarkable man and a great force for good in the publishing world. Under a gruff and sometimes prickly demeanour, he was kind, thoughtful and fair-minded. He epitomised two of the great strengths of the Independent Publishers Guild in his fierce independence and in his willingness to help and share information with others. He was central to the foundation and growth of the Independent Publishers Guild itself and was rightly proud of his contribution to it over many years. I personally am most grateful for the encouragement and support he gave me as a publisher. I also knew him as a neighbour and a friend. I know how proud he was of his family’s many achievements, whether those of his wife, his brother or his children. His family can certainly be proud of him, of what he achieved and who he was.
